When your title is “Celebration Expert,” the pressure is on relating to in-office birthday celebrations. Each time we celebrate someone on our group, we follow our core concept: personalize the celebration with thoughtful details to make the person feel special.
That said, our parties are exactly that– surprise gatherings throughout the workday that we pull together in between all our regular tasks (hoping the honoree doesn’t discover). As you know, I love to plan a party based on multiple concepts, and another method to pull a celebration together is to focus on one big concept– something meaningful and personal to the person you’re celebrating. I utilize this One Big Idea for our co-workers, but you can follow this technique for anyone you like and desire to celebrate.
These One Big Idea birthday celebrations typically start with a brainstorming session by means of email or text (with the birthday individual being left off the chain, obviously). Once we settle on a concept, we figure out how to work that one big concept throughout the celebration. Inevitably, these information surprise and delight the birthday person, even if they believe we may be preparing a little birthday get-together.
I’m always amazed at how thoughtful and innovative these synergy wind up, too– it’s an in-office joke that at every celebration, I state, “This is our best one ever!” However I imply it! Each party is special– and making somebody feel unique is what celebrating is all about.

Vanessa’s SoulCycle Soirée
For Vanessa, SoulCycle isn’t simply a spinning class; it’s a community. She loves her buddies and instructors and feels excellent after each session. For a SoulCycle-themed birthday, we let SoulCycle’s intense yellow logo design guide us and filled the celebration with strong yellow information, from cake pops decorated in yellow with Darcy’s drawing of a bike wheel, huge yellow balloons and lemonade bottles to yellow-and-white striped straws. To make the party even more individual, we copied and printed Darcy’s illustration of Vanessa on a SoulCycle bike, cut them out, and spread them around the table like confetti. And we chose the perfect present would be a certificate for a post-workout massage.
Jemme’s Red Lip Party
Among our favorite creative directors, Jemme, has an amazing signature style. And no matter what she’s wearing, 9 times out of 10, she’s sporting a bold red lip. When it came time to toss her a birthday party, I filled it with intense red lips– sugar lips as garnishes on champagne coupes (simply press them into the rim of the glass!), “confetti” constructed of my red lip illustration and speech bubbles, our kiss crown for the birthday queen to wear, and a Champagne bottle covered in lipstick kisses. (Well, those are in fact lips I drew utilizing a red Sharpie.).
Everyone entrusted a traditional red lipstick due to the fact that who does not require a red lip? Jemme loved the celebration– she believed it was chef’s- kiss ideal.
